Omar Ribeiro Thomaz: A Presence That Endures

The Department of Anthropology and the Graduate Program in Social Anthropology at the Faculty of Philosophy, Letters, and Human Sciences of the University of São Paulo (FFLCH/USP) express their deep sorrow at the passing of Omar Ribeiro Thomaz, a professor at the State University of Campinas (Unicamp), a researcher with an outstanding career and a colleague deeply cherished by our academic community.
Omar completed his Ph.D. in Social Anthropology at USP between 1990 and 1997, under the guidance of Professor Paula Montero, with the dissertation *Echoes of the South Atlantic: Representations of the Third Portuguese Empire*. His intellectual career was marked by research conducted in Mozambique, Guinea-Bissau, and Haiti, as well as by fundamental contributions to studies on colonialism, postcolonialism, and social transformations in African contexts, thereby broadening the horizons of anthropology in Brazil.
At this time of profound sadness, we also wish to remember our colleague and friend, who was so dear to so many of us. His legacy is expressed not only in the significance of his work but also in the friendships he forged, the conversations he shared, the experiences he experienced, and the bonds of affection he built throughout his academic life. His absence will be deeply felt by those who had the opportunity to spend time with him and engage in dialogue. His intellectual contributions, the avenues of research he helped to open, and the many personal and academic relationships he cultivated will live on. The Department of Anthropology and the PPGAS/USP express their solidarity and affection to the family, friends, colleagues, and students of Omar Ribeiro Thomaz.
