Mouth of the Earth: Ecological Violence and Artistic Practices
In recent decades, the proliferation of extreme climatic and socio-political events—also a central theme in the debate surrounding the Anthropocene—has intensified critiques regarding the ways humanity and the earth are linked and inscribed upon one another, co-constituted by systemic colonial, racial, and cisnormative violence.
In this session, I will address the notion of "transitional corporeality" as a way to reflect on modes of perception that accompany and materialize these processes of planetary transition. Through art-based research methodologies, performance and fictional writing will be considered as tools or sensitive markers of environmental transition and ecological violence.
I begin with a series of written experiments and performances that attempt to conceive a "writing of the stone" (Yusoff, 2019)—linking language and geology—or the possibility of an eco-transfeminist archive that revisits the work of Monique Wittig. I will also share some of the work developed by the Terra Batida network, a platform for artistic residencies focused on socio-environmental conflicts that fosters collective processes of creation, research, and programming across various territories and contexts in Portugal and Brazil. Between 2024 and 2025, through a network of Indigenous artists and researchers, Terra Batida organized residencies in ethnographic and historical museums in Lisbon and Coimbra—spaces where Indigenous bodies remain confined in the form of "museum objects."
