Nota de Pesar - Michel Misse

Note of Condolence - Michel Misse

The Department of Anthropology and the Graduate Program in Social Anthropology of the University of São Paulo (PPGAS/USP) express their profound sorrow at the passing of Michel Misse (1951–2025), one of the most important Brazilian sociologists and an international reference in studies on the sociology of crime and violence. A full professor at the Institute of Philosophy and Social Sciences, Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (IFCS/UFRJ), and a member of the Graduate Program in Sociology and Anthropology (PPGSA/UFRJ), Michel founded and coordinated, until 2023, the Núcleo de Estudos da Cidadania, Conflito e Violência Urbana (Necvu), consolidating a space for critical reflection and academic production of enormous impact. In this moment of immense loss, we express our solidarity with his partner Joana Vargas, his sons André, Daniel and Michel Júnior, his grandchildren, his relatives and friends, his colleagues at IFCS and Necvu, and the broad network of students and supervisees who will continue to be inspired by his intellectual and deeply humane legacy.
