The mission of the Department of Anthropology (DA) consists of three main purposes: 1) training students of the undergraduate program in Social Sciences; 2) providing professional training for anthropologists and 3) educating students for citizenship. We are committed to offering undergraduate students in Social Sciences a strong background in Anthropology so that they may be proficient in different professional areas: primary and secondary education, public and private agencies, research centers and institutes of learning, consulting services, university extension activities, etc.

Undergraduate students in social sciences and, especially, master and doctoral students of PPGAS, as well as postdoctoral students engaged in research, university extension and cultural activities, are also involved in the mission of the DA, as seen, particularly in their participation in the various research centers of the Department, in the organization of lectures and seminars, and in the publishing of journals. ndary education, public and private agencies, research centers and institutes of learning, consulting services, university extension activities, etc.

The DA offers extension courses; organizes lectures and symposiums; and publishes various journals: the Revista de Antropologia ("Anthropology Journal", the first in its field and one of the most qualified in Brazil), the digital journal Ponto Urbe(organized and edited by NAU - Urban Anthropology Center, as abbreviated in Portuguese), and the Revista Cadernos de Campo ("Field Notes Journal", organized and edited by PPGAS students). These are key activities for citizen education in so far as they allow social scientists, anthropologists and other professionals interested in anthropological disciplines and events to act as opinion makers, producers and disseminators of critical knowledge regarding processes of production, preservation and transformation of social life.
